In this old traditional hair transplant method, a long-thin strip of scalp is removed, mostly from the posterior part of scalp. Hair follicles once removed are then divided into individual units in the presence of microscope.
It is one of the cheaper method, applied for hair transplant surgeries as the harvesting stage is more convenient than other existing methods. Anyhow, this method leaves back a clear scar that could be visible if hair are short and if the subject is prone to Keloid scarring. Although a donor site is sewed back once harvest is completed but still the scar can easily be observed at donor site.

Disadvantages of FUT:
When compared to FUE (Follicular Unit extraction), the significant drawbacks are long healing period per transplant session and the risk of clearly visible scar. Most of the times in FUT procedure the scar left on donor site are linear scars and additional FUT treatments can also result in stretching of subject’s scalp, which can worsen the look of that linear scar.
Moreover, because of being more invasive method, hair implanted by FUT procedure takes more time for recovery. The stitches used to sew down excisions of grafts strip are likely to be there for 1-2 weeks and it is advised to avoid any activity that is strenuous even after removal of those stitches for few weeks.

This is oldest hair transplant method and not preferred by physicians anymore. Only few hair transplant clinics offer this method in the world.
